Mitski releases new single/video 'Your Best American Girl' from upcoming LP

Brooklyn songwriter Mitski - our Record of the Month in November 2014 - just unveiled this new video for single 'Your Best American Girl,' featured in her fourth studio album 'Puberty 2,' released on June 17th on Dead Oceans. The Japanese-American artist will headline a US tour as a three piece in the summer, and play a few shows in Europe next week. The band's June 20th show at Bowery Ballroom is sold out, so you better get your tickets for the following NYC show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Juyly 27.
Porches is The Deli NYC's Best Emerging Artist of 2014. Mitski is #2, Beverly #3

Deli Readers,
Our Best of NYC Poll for Emerging Artists has been - as usual - a lengthy and painstaking journey which took us through prairies of numbers, horizons filled with band names, and a dense, (mostly) joyous rain of music, but we have finally arrived at destination: we can announce the final results. This year we heave a very electric guitar heavy chart - at least for the top positions.
We are happy to announce that Porches is The Deli NYC's Emerging Artist of the Year, and will therefore grace the cover of the upcoming spring issue of The Deli. We've been fans of the band for a while now (their beautiful latest release "Slow Dance in the Cosmos" was our record of the month back in December 2013), and we'll take this opportunity to reveal that we actually offered them the cover of The Deli twice in the past 6 months, something that didn't materialize only because in both instances they couldn't play a show linked to the issue's launch. As they say, it was destined to happen!
Another recent Deli record of the month landed in second place: uber-talented solo indie rocker Mitski (a project we have a feeling will soon become a band, because, well... it sounds like a band!). Her 2014 record "bury me at makeout creek" reveals a multifaceted talent, but first and foremostly, great songwriting.
One of The Deli's staff's favorite genres - dream pop - gets on the podium thanks to guitarist and vocalist Drew Citron's brainchild Beverly, whose debut album "Careers" enjoyed the creative input of ubiquitous Brooklyn DIY scene talent Frankie Rose, who left the band shortly after the record was released (that's what ubiquitous musicians do!).
If you wonder how this chart came into existence, here is how it all went down: first, we let the local bands submit their music (for free), and got our Deli editors to pick the nominees. Then we polled a list of 15+ NYC scene expert (our jury) and asked them to nominate 3 more bands of their choice each. Then we polled our writers, then we polled our readers. We tried to keep things open for each single genre, from Indie Rock to Roots Music to Hip Hop.
If you are a geek interested in all the subtelties related to how this poll works, you can read its rules here (happy reading!). But if all you care about is the awesome new music NYC produced in the year 2013, this list is all you need. Enjoy!
Many Thanks to our Jurors: Alex Borsody (independent show organizer), Alex Rossiter (Webster Hall), Andy Bodor (Cake Shop), Ariel (Palisades), Billy Jones (Baby's All Right), Diane (Bowery Electric), Christina Cook (Sofar Sound), Clark (The Delancey), Eric Berrebbi (Arlene's Grocery), Eric Weiner (The Wild Honey Pie), Free Williamsburg, George Flanagan (Rough Trade NYC), Heath Miller (Webster Hall), Jacob Moyers (Cameo Gallery), Jaime Dominguez (SESAC), Jen Lyon (Bowery Electric), Lauren Beck (The L magazine), Matt Currie (Rockwood Music Hall), Matt McDonald (CMJ), Max Brennan (Lit Lounge), Mike Leonard (Bowery Presents), Nora dabdoub (Shea Stadium), Patrick McNamara (Oh My Rockness), Rami Haykal (Glasslands), Samantha Cox (BMI), Steven King (The Rock Shop), Steven Matrick (Pianos), Tim Maginnis (Ascap), Todd Abramson (Maxwells), Paolo De Gregorio (The Deli).

Record of the Month: Mitski "bury me at makeout creek" release party tonight (11.13) at Silent Barn

In her third album "bury me at makeout creek," Brooklyn songwriter Mitski reveals a dual musical personality and a multi-faceted talent. Opener "texas reznikoff" presents us with what (deceptively) sounds like your regular, acoustic guitar armed singer songwriter, who gently sings about her wishes, her lovers and far away lands. It takes less than a minute and a half for that first impression to get completely subverted by a sudden build up of distorted guitars. The sonic saturation continues in the following track, the noise pop gem "townie," where Mitski sounds like a riot girl of the new millennium, crafting a beautifully tense melody, full of carefree lyrics, over an unrelenting carpet of fuzzy guitars and feedback. Following track "first love / late spring" take us back to the initial sparseness, introducing a very elegant, if not seductive melody, reminiscent of the crooning charmers of the '50s. A few tracks later, "jobless monday" doubles down on the crooner-pop influences, forging another incredibly beautiful vocal line. The rest of the record keeps dwelling between these recurrent extremes, revealing an artist who relies on her pop sensibility to allow her poetry to shine, while her instinctive, youthful angst leads her to reject anything that's too conventional or predictable. Many great records emerge from this kind of tension.
Don't miss the album's release party tonight at Silent Barn.

Jake's CMJ 2014 Days 4: Sharpless, Attic Basement, Mitski, Small Wonder

My Friday night was spent primarily at The Silent Barn (pictured) for the Miscreant and Father/Daughter Records showcase. I'll add that I spent all of the next day there as well; having spent the most time there than any venue, Silent Barn had my favorite bills of CMJ by far, and none of them were official. Although I was particularly exhausted that day/night and ended up leaving earlier than I would've liked, I did catch some great acts that I had been meaning to see for a while. I will say that this was a stacked bill, I'm only going to talk about a few of the bands that really stand out to me. - Keep reading Jake Saunders report of Day 4 of the CMJ Music Marathon 2014.
