Maxwell Stern

Weekend Warrior - August 9 - 11

Bad Heaven Ltd. is the latest project from Snowing’s John Galm, who is also backed by Tyler Bussey (No Thank You, Strange Ranger, The World Is A Beautiful Place…) on guitar and vocals, Ross Barzuk (Snowing) on bass, and Melissa Brain (Amanda X, MARGE) on drums. The band just dropped its new LP Strength last week, the follow-up to the group’s 2016 debut Cool Hell. Originally inspired by acts like Sparklehorse and Elliott Smith, Galm revealed that “Strength is about being young and stupid and thinking things are good and will continue to be good, when realistically they’re not, and it’s just gonna hit you again.” Bad Heaven Ltd. will be bringing all those feels to Philly’s favorite batting cages/DIY space Everybody Hits this Saturday, where they’ll also be joined by Maxwell Stern (of Signals Midwest). – Alexis V.

Weekend Warrior, April 27 - 29

The assemblage of Port Arthur creates engaging, intimate folk. The proximity of the storytelling exhibits a trustful confidence, opening the curtains for all to see and coaxing communicable scenarios in the process. One finds joy in pensive vulnerability, which retains an elevated touch as a cavalcade of instrumentation paints the finer details. Tonight at Kung Fu Necktie, they’ll be joined by the unwavering, straight-shooting songwriting of Shannen Moser, which aches while simultaneously exuding a heartwarming resilience. Signals Midwest’s Maxwell Stern will also invite you on an observational caravan, tying together external sensations and circumstances with internal revelations. Chicago’s Friends of the Bog completes this formidable, folk lineup. New Track: "Going To My Brother’s House" - Maxwell Stern

Perusing unfamiliar territory, “Going To My Brother’s House,” the latest single from Maxwell Stern (of Signals Midwest), glides in a roundabout, acoustic-folk stroll. Along the song’s evolution, it traveled the globe from Philly to Pittsburgh, to Australia, to Chicago, where it was augmented by Mother Evergreen to become what we hear now. There’s an unassuming nature as the tune guides you down a path. Picking up additional instrumental pieces along the way fully fleshes out its details, as the catchy, lyrical string tongue-ties. There’s a familiarity in realizing when you're out of your comfort zone and the aspects that you notice in those circumstances. You can find Stern opening things up at Kung Fu Necktie on Friday, April 27, as part of a billing that also includes Shannen Moser, Port Arthur, and Friends of the Bog.

New Maxwell Stern Single Available for Streaming & Download

Maxwell Stern (of Signals Midwest) recently shared a new single release. “Light Later Lately” serves as a sun-baked ode to summer, with a relaxed, folk sing-along feel and warm organ tones. And the B-side, a cover of Cayetana’s “Mountain Kids,” which originally appeared on 2014's Nervous Like Me, takes a reserved, meditative approach, as the percussive nature/tempo languidly steps back. You can catch Stern on Saturday, September 2 at Broke Down Palace, as part of a lineup that also includes Mother Evergreen, Blue Ranger, and Alenni.
